dating & the obama party

So I signed up on the Obama website for a hear-Obama-accept-the-nomination party next Thursday night. That’s the kind of thing it’s much more fun to view with other people, and all my friends are out of the city or not as interested in politics as I am. The party is around the corner from Performer’s apartment, but I know by his website that he’ll be out of town.

And although I don’t feel quite ready to date, it’s always fun to meet new people of any variety.

who do i hope will be there?
9 single women, ages 70 – 80
36 single men, ages 63 – 69
14 GLBT
me

who is likely to be there?
33 single women, 35 – 50
14 GLBT
6 couples in their 40s-50s
me

That’s called demographic fantasy and demographic reality.

But you never know, do you; no, you don’t. It’s always useful to expand your network, talk to lots and lots of people, and recycle your men, your friends, your connections. Any new person could potentially lead Somewhere Interesting…

It will be my first foray into semi-public space to meet Strangers since I met Plan C on the night of Sunday 10 February.

I’m ready, whoever they are.

That sounds like it will be really cool! And I like your attitude. I hope you are pleasantly surprised.

  2. hi lolita, i’ll post about it if it’s good blog material.
[and did you like my obama jewelry?!]

I second Lolita Wolf–this sounds fun! And you’re right, you never know who might present a new opportunity for you. Even the most staid couple you meet at this event might have connections with a Mr Wonderful. And at the very least, you are taking part in history, if not a terrific cause. (I’m jealous!) xx

  4. don’t be jealous, a&v, go to one in wine country! there are zillions of these parties.
just go to http://www.barackobama.com and click on ‘events’ and plug in your zip code.
in manhattan alone there must be 10 or more of these convention parties.
it would be fun to compare notes, and you would enjoy the outing for the same reasons i would.

Mimi you are amazing! What a great idea. I just checked out that site and found a plethora of parties, as well as a beach bash! Why didn’t I think of this before? I’m going to check out some of these near my zip code.

  6. that’s wonderful! with luck we’ll both go to bloggable parties. isn’t it lucky, that the same events can help progressive politics and dating? or at least provide what might be opportunities that one way or the other lead to dating…One of my will-not-date categories is Republicans, so this is one way to rule them out from the start.

now, i still have the feeling that the party i’m going to will be predominately female, but that’s okay. i bet the california obama beach bash will be a lot cooler than the manhattan party i signed on to, but we can compare…

Have fun! Is that real jewelry? I love it!

  8. k, that is CONFETTI!! someone sent a friend of mine confetti w. o’s name, and she gave me some. you can buy it onliine. so i just took 3 pieces & put them on a chain. i like it because it doesn’t ruin your clothes the way the buttons do, though i have plenty of those. at any rate, that’s what i’m wearing these days!

Mimi, even though you must know that the Vows column is hardly a representative sampling of anything (and they are specifically screening in for good stories), I draw your attention to today’s Vows video, where both parties were widowed and had also known each other since teenagehood.

  10. pt, thank you so much for pointing that out. i usually read Vows but don’t look at the videos, so i would otherwise have missed that.

….i cried my way through it….it was really lovely to hear what that bride & groom had to say.

if i didn’t know that plan c is feeling sad now, i would call his attention to it.

Mimi, which Obama party are you going to? Maybe I will see you there. I would guess Upper East or Upper West. You and I and the other 31 single women can commiserate.

  12. It’s not either of those.
