Happy First Birthday, Sexagenarian and the City!

A year ago today, Sunday 18 February 2007, Sexagenarian and the City was born.

* * *

Late on Saturday 17 February, I was sitting in a dark bar on Houston Street with my friend Belinda, complaining (as usual that season) about my dismal social life.

‘You should have a blog and write about your dates,’ said Belinda, a sometime blogger herself, who proceeded to explain to me the basics of blog-writing.

‘You’ll need a catchy name for it,’ she said.

‘You mean something like — oh — let’s see — Sexagenarian and the City?’

‘Yes! That’s good! Use it!.’

* * *

Belinda told me about WordPress.com and gave me a few more pointers. When I got home that night I immediately set things up, and the next morning wrote my first post.

* * *

The blog soon became so important to me that the blogosphere began to seem more than virtual. By now I’ve met many fellow-bloggers in the world outside the blogosphere, and I’ve corresponded privately with others whom I know I’ll meet. Many of the people who wrote comments are, I feel, my friends, and they’ve certainly helped me get through some dark hours.

So Happy Birthday, SATC.

Blog-friends, please help yourselves to a piece of cake and a glass of champagne.

And Belinda, thank you so much for setting me going in the blogosphere.

Mimi.

    Congratulations! We started our blogs merely weeks apart and look how far we’ve come! I will most definitely let you know when I get to NYC next. I’ve yet to meet any other blog-ladies in person. Mostly because you are all in New York….Thanks for sharing your adventures, heartaches, funny insights and more.
    Best, DT

    thank you, DT. perhaps you feel, as i do, that dating-with-blog is really an entirely different experience from just plain dating. the prospect of transforming a dreadful date into a funny post made so many dates bearable….

    *definitely* tell me when you’ll next be in ny. it would be great fun to meet.
